Just came back from a quick ski trip to Lake Tahoe. Well, we got back a few hours ago. Let’s just say, the spectacular snow Thursday afternoon and today made up for the nightmarish drive up Wednesday evening.

Yep. That’s right, we drove up during the winter storm advisory, through the rapidly falling snow, in the gloom of night. What should have been a four hour drive became a seven hour torturous drive.

First lesson: never leave during rush hour. We left at 3:30 pm. The original plan was to leave by 1:00 pm to get out of bay area traffic. But nope… at 1:00 pm, my dad was still seeing his last two patients. At 1:00 pm the old ski rack was still on the car and the new ski rack was still in its box. At 1:00 pm my brother wasn’t even packed, nevermind the car being loaded and ready to go.
Needless to say, leaving at 3:30 pm, we hit traffic on 237, in Fremont, in Walnut Creek, in Sacramento, we reached Roseville around 7:00 pm. Two chain control stations later we had the entire snow covered eastbound three lanes of I-80 all to ourselves. We crept along on I-80, driving in two lanes and hit Donner Pass around 9:00 pm. Then we crept along on I-80, down to Reno where we had reservations and managed to arrive at 10:30 pm.

There was a winter storm advisory for Thursday morning until 10:00 am, so we didn’t bother waking up early. Thursday afternoon’s skiing was glorious!
But cold.
The storm from the night before dumped a lot of snow. Fresh powder layered thick and soft. It was so lovely.
Very few people were on the slopes on Thursday, so we essentially had the mountain to ourselves.

The thing is, after hopping into my skis, I realized, umm… yeah, I’d forgotten how to use downhill skis. We didn’t go skiing last season and the season before we went telemark skiing. I ended up snow plowing down the hill a few times before I could remember how to turn. ooops…

Friday, today, was even better than Thursday. For one thing, it was warmer. The sun was actually out for a bit. The snow was still very fresh, even though there were more people today.

mmm… I love skiing. But I still want my telemark skis.

Great report. The snow is fantastic, although I’m not sure I could do 7 hours in a car for it.
